A person applying a pesticide product in the course of his or her employement or other business activity in the state of Michigan must be a certified pesticide applicator or a registered technician. Certified applicators may be either private or commercial. Private applicator certification is required for persons who use pesticides to produce a commodity such as on a farm, nursery, or greenhouse operation. Commercial applicators are persons who apply pesticides for hire such as peole who work for turf/ornamental or pest control companies. Registered technicians may also be private or commercial. The primary difference between a certified applicator and a registered technician is that certified applicators can purchase and apply restricted-use pesticides (RUPs); registered technician can not purchase RUPs but may apply them under the direct supervision of a certified applicator if permitted by the label. The process for becoming a certified applicator or registered techncian varies somewhat depending on whether you are a new applicant or an already certified applicant seeking to renew your 3-year credential.
