Our Mission
Working together to reduce the health and environmental risks of pests and pesticides in Michigan communities.

Philosophy
We believe that the best way to eliminate the misuse of pesticides and reduce the risks of pests and pesticides in our homes is to teach community members about safe pest management.

We believe that through education residents will be empowered to fight and manage pests in their communities.

Who We Are
The Community Pesticide Education Program (CPEP) is administered by the Michigan Department of Agriculture and Michigan State University.

Partners include the Michigan Pest Control Association, the University of Michigan, the Michigan Nursery and Landscape Association, the Michigan Environmental Action Council, the Michigan Migrant Legal Assistance Project, and the Environmental Protection Agency, Region 5.

What We Do
CPEP forms Community IPM Education Working Groups made up of community organizations, leaders, and residents to identify the education and resources needed in the specific community to combat pests in the safest and most effective way possible. CPEP then offers hands-on training, information, and resources targeted at problem pests in that community.

Common Household Pests of Concern
Cockroaches
Rats
Mice
Pantry Pests
Head Lice
Fleas
Ants
Bats

Approach to Pest Control
We teach Integrated Pest Management (IPM) as a sensible and safer way to battle pests in our homes.

IPM in the home involves asking the following questions:
What pests are present, and how many are there?
Where are they coming from?
How can I control them?
How can I keep them out?

Control Methods can include:
Sanitation
Exclusion
Mechanical means (trapping, fly swatters)
Biological control
Pesticides

By following these principles, we can control pests and minimize health risks in our homes.
